Benefits of Red Light Therapy
The science and benefits of red light therapy still seems to sound woo-woo for some. The truth is, red light therapy is a science backed treatment providing benefits for a variety of things. In fact, some red light therapy masks are an FDA approved treatment tool for things like acne and improving skin, backed by over 40 peer reviewed clinical studies.
Red light therapy and other low-level-light therapies rely on a process called photobiomodulation to provide the benefits, with this phenomenon having an effect on the health of our mitochondria, driving growth and repair.
While red light therapy is used for a variety of specific things like hair growth, muscle recovery, mitochondrial health, wound healing, eye health and more, the vast majority of people are using things like red light therapy face masks for the proven benefits for skin.
The scientific evidence supporting these benefits is substantial and continually growing. Here are some key skin health advantages:
1. Boosts Collagen Production
Collagen, the protein responsible for skin's elasticity and firmness, naturally decreases with age, leading to wrinkles and sagging.
Scientific Studies: Research shows that red light therapy can enhance collagen production by up to 30% after just a few sessions.
2. Reduces Inflammation
Inflammation contributes to skin problems like redness, swelling, and irritation.
Scientific Studies: Red light therapy reduces inflammation at the cellular level by increasing the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell's primary energy source.
3. Fades Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Aging, exacerbated by factors like sun exposure, results in fine lines and wrinkles.
Scientific Studies: Red light therapy stimulates collagen and elastin production, addressing these signs of aging and restoring a more youthful appearance.
4. Improves Skin Texture
Red light therapy fosters the growth of new, healthy skin cells, resulting in smoother and more even skin.
Scientific Studies: By promoting cell renewal, red light therapy enhances skin texture and complexion, reducing the roughness caused by inflammation.
5. Treats Skin Conditions
Red light therapy offers a safe and effective solution for various skin conditions, including acne, psoriasis, and eczema.
Acne: It reduces inflammation, kills bacteria, unclogs pores, and accelerates healing, leading to a clearer complexion.
Psoriasis and Eczema: By alleviating inflammation and promoting skin healing, red light therapy provides relief for those with these chronic conditions.
HigherDOSE Red Light Mask Review
The HigherDOSE red light mask is definitely a cult favourite, and this mask has one of the best looking and best feeling designs of any red light mask we’ve seen.
There are a few key things I love about the HigherDOSE Red Light Mask that make it a standout.
What We Like
High grade silicone for comfort
Three securing straps
Stylish colour
High irradiance
14 day returns
What We Don’t Like
Limited shipping options
Price
I’ll admit, $349 is a splurge for a red light mask considering the other options. The reality is, there’s far more design and quality associated with the HigherDOSE red light mask than others. What you will notice straight away is the clear instructions given on the use of the red light mask, multiple power adapters for use in different countries, a far more comfortable fit provided by the three strap configuration, and the ultra comfortable and easy to clean medical grade silicone design.
The HigherDOSE red light mask is also a good one to travel with, packing very flat (with a storage bag included) and not taking up much room at all if this is something you are looking at carrying around with you for skin health on the go. You will notice that some of the other cheaper red light masks are made with a more rigid and solid mask design, making them less desirable to pack into a bag or suitcase to travel with.
In terms of user experience, while the HigherDOSE red light mask is not completely cord free, with the remote attaching to the mask via a single cord, it is very easy to tuck the remote into your pants or bra, so that you can easily move around and go hands-free while getting your skin routine done at night or in the morning. Beware, it gets pretty bright with these things on, so reading or doing things that require full vision can be a challenge. Best to just kick back for the 10-20 minute pre set program – I like habit stacking the red light mask treatment with a short meditation which feels really nice.
HigherDOSE Red Light Mask Specs
It is true that there are a huge volume of red light therapy masks on the market to choose from. Some a super cheap, but they fall short in quality. The value of a red light therapy mask lays in its specifications including the amount and quality of its led bulbs, the spectrum of light it produces in “nm” and the irradiance or power density it provides. All of these elements essentially make up the power and efficacy of the red light mask.
The HigherDOSE red light mask is one of the top performers in a lot of these metrics and below are it’s important specifications to consider:
• Bulbs: 66 LED bulbs
• LEDs: 132 LEDs ( 2per bulb)
• RED: 630nm. NIR: 830nm
• Irradiance: 50 mW/cm2
• Program time: 10minutes or 20minutes
• Device Dimensions: 295mm(w) x 216mm(h)
• Controller: 103 x 24 x 29mm
• Electrical output: 5V/1A/2600mAh
• Electrical Input from power adapter : 100-240V
• Operating Temperature: 0℃ to 40℃
• Storage and Transport Temperature: -5℃ to 55℃
It is important to note that the HigherDOSE red light mask does not currently ship to Australia and although it is suitable for use with 100-240V making it suitable to use in most places in the world.
The average red light therapy studies use red LED and near-infrared (NIR) light therapy outputs ranging from 20 to 200 mW/cm², depending on the device. With the use of red light therapy masks, because the mask is so close to the skin, an irradiance of 50mW/cm2 is strong and makes the HigherDOSE red light mask an efficient treatment device.
In general, most red light therapy masks range between 20-55mW/cm2, which means the HigherDOSE masks provides a high enough irradiance to reduce the treatment time required, without making the device uncomfortable on the face to the point it generates to much heat.

Conclusion on HigherDOSE Red Light Mask
Overall, there is not much to complain about with the HigherDOSE red light mask. This is definitely a market leader in the red light therapy tool world and no surprise that most choose HigherDOSE despite the price.
We confidently give the HigherDOSE red light mask an overall rating of 4.9/5 which is echoed by the hundreds of other customer reviews of the Higherdose mask. Having been through the trenches of finding things that work for Perioral Dermatitis, I have found that when I ditched pretty much every lotion, cream, pill or ointment based treatment and donned the red light mask consistently, that’s when things started to improve.
Of course, this is not medical advice for the treatment of PD or anything else, but we highly recommend at least trying the HigherDOSE for improving skin health from the standpoint of a science based approach.
